I read the multi-award winning Maddi’s Fridge, by Lois Brandt and Vin Vogel, when it first released in 2014, and still remember the poignancy of the story. Two best friends, Sophia and Maddi, spend their afternoons racing to the rock wall (Sophia always wins), climbing that rock wall (which Maddi definitely owns), and laughing their way through the day. Everything is familiar and fun…until the moment Sophia opens Maddi’s fridge and finds only a single carton of milk.
Maddi begs Sophia not to tell. And in the way kids love so earnestly, Sophia tries to fix it on her own by sneaking her friend questionable fish and eggs, until she realizes something bigger is needed. It’s a story about courage, generosity, community, and doing the right thing even when it’s hard — all messages that fit into this season.
So when Flashlight Press invited readers to preview their brand-new Maddi’s Fridge app, I leapt at the chance. And friends…this app is wonderful.
It keeps everything that makes the book so impactful, but adds a layer of interactivity that children will like. It’s simple to navigate, offers the choice of reading independently or having the story read aloud, includes engaging movement points throughout the book that brings more life to the story, and even has extra games like Memory, Word Search, and coloring pages inspired by the book.

Max was instantly excited when I told him we were reading Maddi’s Fridge – he actually recognized it from school and started telling me what he remembered before we’d even opened it. Once I showed him the cover, he said, “Yep, that’s the one!” and was even more keen when I told him there’s now an app version.
The story itself is beautiful and important, a gentle look at childhood hunger, friendship, and wanting to help someone you care about. It opened up such a natural little chat with Max about looking out for our friends and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.
The new Maddi’s Fridge app is such a clever way to bring the book to life. There’s a “Read to Me” mode with narration, or kids can choose “Read by Myself.” Max loved the tap-to-discover animations, the little movements and sounds tucked into each page, and then he jumped straight into the games. There’s a word search, a memory game, colouring pages, and even a little guide about helping friends who might need support.
It’s a meaningful story on its own, and the app adds a fun, interactive layer that really keeps kids engaged. Max gave it a huge thumbs up.

It has been a struggle to keep Avalyn occupied during break and she has ZERO interest in reading right now.
Well, I found a super cute app “Maddi’s Fridge” by Flashlight Press. It is the sweetest story about a little girl and her friend who has an empty fridge and she wants to help her get food. It is an animated story, but it also has the actual words on the pages and it highlights each word as it reads it.
After they read the story there are three games. A memory game with three levels (easy, medium, hard), a word search with three levels and coloring pages.
The best part is that it is an AR book so they can take the AR test when they are done!
